Material: Lignin, recycled cellulose, charcoal
The project Knock on Wood is centered around the material exploration of two polymers that make up the cell walls of every tree: cellulose and lignin. While in nature their connection give strength to plants, they are industrially separated to produce cellulose based paper products. In this process 95% of the lignin is burned. The aim of this project is to reunite them again and create a bio-material that relates back to the tree.
This new collection within the material research introduces a burned texture, creating a visual link to the Japanese yakisugi technique, in which wood is burned to preserve it, while at the same time putting attention towards the fact that lignin is burned on a global scale.
