There are countless notions and associations connected to blood, the most substantial being life and death, blood can symbolize both and worlds in between.
It tells a thousand stories, steeped in meaning and mysticism. Yet, the very real narrative of cowblood as a by-product and waste stream remains untold. The slaughterhouse industry is one of the most resource intensive in the world, yet it remains almost invisible - this disconnection makes it difficult to create a common ground to talk about the ethics of production and consumption. The work offers a platform for confrontation and reflection regarding our relation towards animals.

All the objects are made 100% from discarded cowblood.

Year: 2022Material: Lignin, recycled cellulose

European Spruce (Picea Abies) has evergreen leaves and likes to grow in deep, wet soils.
Once harvested it can be turned into wood chips, and then into cellulose fiber by ways of extracting a brownish substance called lignin.
Cellulose and lignin are the two most abundant organic polymers on earth. While one is used excessively in a host of different industries such as the paper and textile industry, the other stays largely unexplored, remaining an underutilized by-product. In fact, to date lignin is mostly burned in thermal waste plants for the production of energy, with all the consequential negative emissions.
This project traces the journey that those two polymers take, back to the moment when the cellulose fiber was held together by the lignin in a tree.

In Europe’s agroforestry, Picea Abies, or European Spruce, is one of the most cultivated trees, often grown in large monocultures for its pulp, timber and resin.
Complex industrial production uprooted the connection between plants as suppliers for products and the consumer. It is difficult to hold a piece of paper and see a tree. The objects made in this project are meant to evoke mindfulness and a connection to the source of their material, when held they can hopefully remind you of a tree, the rough texture of the bark, the year rings that keep track of the seasons and the landscape in which the tree grew.

Tree-ism is a design-research project exploring, through storytelling and by means of tangible physicalities, the immense potential offered by lignin when reconnected with cellulose, through processes of recombination and rematerialisation of residual matters.

At the center of the physical material research stands the ambition to find multiple ways to reconnect lignin with cellulose and link them conceptually to the processing of the two polymers across scales while imagining possible futures of regenerative transformation.
Currently those reconnections manifest themselves in three different materialities:
Thermoformed biocomposite consisting of lignin and cellulose. The two components are mixed together and are then filled into a metal mold and heat pressed at 180° C with around 10 tons of pressure. Heat and pressure activate the inherent binding properties of lignin without the addition of synthetic substances. Just like in a tree lignin binds the cellulose fiber to each other, therefore creating a remade wood bioplastic. Polymer Clay made from Lignin Sulfonate, cellulose fiber and water. Being a by-product of paper production, which in itself is a gigantic industry, lignin comes in many different forms that vary depending on the different paper production methods. One of the most commonly used methods is called kraft pulping in which the lignin is made soluble through the use of sulfates. This lignin stays water soluble which offers the opportunity to create hydrogen bonds between the lignin polymers and once it is mixed with cellulose fiber it turns into a strong polymer clay that is plant based without any synthetic components.Ink / Coating made from lignin, arabic gum, turpentine from the orange tree, linseed oil and water. This ink can be used to silkscreen print onto cellulose based paper and through that form another reconnection between lignin and cellulose. Another application is to create a coating for the polymer clay and the thermoformed biocomposite, to make it water resistant through increasing the amount of arabic gum and linseed oil in the formula. This process is still being developed at this moment.

Year: 2024Material: Lignin, recycled cellulose Unique design pieces resulting out of the ‘Tree-ism’ research.

European Spruce (Picea Abies) has evergreen leaves and likes to grow in deep, wet soils.

When cut down for consumption it can be turned into wood chips, and then into cellulose fiber by ways of extracting a brownish substance called lignin.

This project harnesses the potential of cellulose and lignin, the most abundant natural polymers on Earth, whose natural connection was broken by the advent of industrial production. While the former has been overused by the paper and textile industry, the latter remains largely untested. As an underused by-product, it is often burned in thermal treatment facilities.

However, in this series cellulose and lignin are rematerialised to create a new kind of wood, embodying traces of the tree they come from. In ancient cultures it was believed that spirits of forests reside in trees, knocking on wood was an act of wishing well and saying thanks.

Arguably the most controversial and shocking of bodily fluids, blood is what keeps us alive, binds us to each other, and what is shed for nations and causes. Not all blood is considered equal, and by great design and deflection, the huge amount of blood produced through the slaughterhouse industry is rendered invisible. As part of the New Material Award fellowship he won in 2018, Basse collaborated with designer and filmmaker Juan Arturo Garcia on a short film which unpacks the industrial and small scale (cow) slaughterhouse industry. The slaughterhouse industry is one of the most resource-intensive and invisible industries of today. Design plays a significant role in this industry; by streamlining processes and increasing efficiency for ever greater profits. The tools and processes used during slaughter determine the value not only of meat, but also its by-products, such as cow blood.

Year: 2021 Collaboration with microENVISION, T.Jayashree, Juan Arturo Garcia, Andres Garcia VidalMaterial: short film

Contagious diseases have shaped human history and they remain with us today. When hearing or reading about
diseases we mostly learn about how they affect our bodies. However, the danger that they pose are not just
the dangers towards our health, but also ones of social stigmatization that can lead to a dehumanization of infected
people.

Statistical data can turn people into numbers and hide their individual stories - people get reduced to their medical
status.

It‘s easy to slip into a behavior that is discriminating if actions are guided by fear and while it is important to stay
safe, it is also important to remain empathetic towards people who have to battle the disease we try to protect
ourselves from.

This work proposes an open dialogue in which stories are told and listened to without fear, prejudice or constraints.
The intention of the work is to give a stage to the histories of individuals who live or have lived with an
infectious disease. The focus within this work lies on the social implications of having an infectious disease and
the stigma these diseases carry.

Laboratory tools such as a microscope are commonly used to analyze and determine medical states, this idea gets turned around by combining microscopic footage of blood with interviews of individuals whose blood contains infectious diseases - the microscope becomes a tool to zoom in on social issues. The work is intended as a safe space for engaging with the personal stories of individuals that live with the infectious
disease HIV.
The film has been commissioned by the Science Gallery Bengaluru for the exhibition ‘Contagion’

Year: 2019 - ongoing
Material: b-stock & damaged eggs

Annually, an average of 6,4 billion hens lay 1,1 trillion eggs. Simultaneously one third of all food per year is lost or wasted which includes eggs that have short shelf life and whose fragile shell is not the most suitable protection against processing and transport.
In the project ‘how do you like your eggs’ the content becomes container, an egg cup is produced from discarded eggs. It explores the extraordinary materiality of an ordinary item of consumption. There is an ambiguity in the symbolism of the egg which embodies on the one hand the beginning of life and on the other hand became swallowed up in cheap consumption.

In the project ‘how do you like your eggs’ damaged and b-stock egg whites and shells are thermoformed into bio-plastic cups with zero additives. In todays context traditional non degradable plastics are highly problematic, especially because of our throw-away culture;
opposed to that in this project a new, fully degradable bioplastic is used to create a narrative about consumptionand waste.

The process starts at the sorting station of the farm I‘m collaborating with. The eggs get checked for damages, dirt and deformations and if they pass the test they go to the shop, if they don‘t they are discarded. It is important to know that those practices vary between different farms; in large scale operations b-stock eggs are turned into mayonnaise, but many smaller and biological farms don‘t produce on a scale that this process would be profitable so they discard the eggs.

When working with an animal product it is extremly important to know where your material comes from since through working with it you are becoming directly related to the well being of a living creature which creates a huge responsibility. That is why one of the most crucial steps of the project was to find a biological and sustainable farm that puts the quality of life of their animals first. We are collaborating with a dutch farming project called GeluksVogel and all the eggs used for the project come from them.

Year: 2019
Material: Blood from HIV+ donors

There are people who are not able to donate their blood because of infectious diseases contained in it. The objects in this series are produced from the blood of donors that are HIV+. Stigmatisation and taboo surrounding HIV are still an immense burden today and they find their physicalization in the blood of an infected person, that is what we are afraid of, the blood. So the possibility to make an object that is sterile and can be touched from the blood of a donor that has HIV is a possibility to break this stigma and taboo. The objects are accompanied by interviews of the donors that focus on their life and how it has been affected by the disease. The work is intended as a series conversation pieces that give a stage to the individual and their story, rather than their medical status. Commissioned for the show ‚Being Human‘ by the Wellcome Collection.

Year: 2017
Material: scrap, used & second hand steel, plastic and ceramic

Portable kitchen designed with three objects on wheels. 'Volta' to brew coffee, 'Lumberjack Jack' serving as the cutting board and server, and 'Hassan' the brazier with fire powerful like a volcano. The design is not based on anything but the imagination and fascination that we have for things when we were children.
The boys on wheels escape into a dreamworld in which design is based on childish fantasies, not logic or ergonomics. Every object was directly translated from the drawing made of it before. The project was created as part of a residency at the LUMA Foundation in Arles, France together with Stefanie Rittler and Donghwan Kam.

First let's have a coffee and then we start the task. In our work we often tend to overthink and create within strict rules of logic. Therefore the idea of Boys on Wheels Part 2 was to play and have fun while thinking with our hands. In general the idea of a playful public space is often restricted to playgrounds, parks or sometimes may fairs. Maybe due to notions of adulthood we fail to expect playful environments around us, especially in cities; that‘s what we try to disrupt with boys on wheels - stop making sense and play. Commissioned and presented at Onomatopee Eindhoven and curated by On/Off Architects Berlin, made together with Donghwan Kam.
